If your child is experiencing symptoms of illness, the last thing you want to do is take them to a separate laboratory for blood work or laboratory testing. Patients of Westchester Park Pediatrics in Purchase, New York, enjoy the convenience of on-site laboratory testing services. If your pediatrician requires blood work or urinalysis during a physical or to diagnose your child’s symptoms, the tests are performed during your visit.
What is laboratory testing?
Laboratory testing involves taking samples of bodily fluids and analyzing them. Blood tests, urinalysis, and other tests help make a diagnosis for an illness or help doctors determine how well the body systems are working. Lab testing helps doctors diagnose diseases and conditions ranging from anemia to diabetes to the flu.
Who is eligible for on-site laboratory testing?
Patients of Westchester Park Pediatrics can get laboratory tests at the practice. The team is trained in phlebotomy, so when blood draws are required during a sick visit or for routine blood work, patients enjoy the convenience of having it done right in the office.
If you have blood work ordered by a physician outside of the practice, however, it cannot be drawn in our office, so you should go to an outside laboratory.
What types of lab tests are available?
For the convenience of patients, Westchester Park Pediatrics offers many laboratory tests on-site, including:
Rapid strep test and throat cultures
If strep throat appears likely, a rapid strep test is done before a throat culture. Rapid strep tests offer results within 10 minutes instead of waiting 1-2 days for the results of a throat culture. If rapid strep test results are positive in the office, antibiotics are prescribed and started immediately.
Rapid flu testing
If your child is ill, especially during flu season, bring them to Westchester Park Pediatrics for a rapid flu test. The team can determine if your child has influenza A or B within minutes and begin appropriate antiviral therapy, if necessary.
Complete blood count
A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test that detects a wide range of disorders and diseases, including anemia, infections, and leukemia. For babies, the blood is obtained with a fingerstick. Older children have blood drawn from their arms.
Cholesterol testing
Cholesterol testing is helpful in managing childhood obesity or high cholesterol. Cholesterol tests are blood tests that measure the amount of certain types of fats and cholesterol in your blood.
Urinalysis
If a urinary tract infection is suspected, a urinalysis is performed to detect bacteria in the urine. The team also performs urine cultures and urine catheterization, if necessary.
